This website features TERRA NAVIGA's illustrated map of Amsterdam, offering a unique perspective by departing from the conventional north-oriented orientation. Instead, it adopts a traditional cartographic approach, positioning the viewer as if standing on the city's waterfront.  As a result, north is located at the lower part of the map. This layout encourages a more intuitive understanding of the city’s layout, with Central Station as the central point from which all directions emanate.

It’s important to note that the map adopts a perspective view, categorising it as a variable scale map. As such, it is not intended for precise measurements or navigation based on absolute distances. Covering an area of 12 square kilometres (4 km by 3 km), the map focuses on highlighting the historical and cultural heart of Amsterdam. While we strive for 99% accuracy when compared to traditional topographic maps, our illustrations adopt a perspective view, following the principles of perspective painting to create the illusion of three-dimensionality. This approach introduces certain deformations, meaning that some areas of the map may appear stretched or compressed in size.

As a result of these deformations, although distances between locations are proportionally correct, the scale of specific areas may differ from the actual terrain they represent. This characteristic places our maps in the category of "variable scale" designs, similar to the 3D "bird's eye views." Consequently, our maps cannot be relied upon for precise calculations involving "absolute measurements" such as time, distances, shapes, or sizes.

Our illustrated maps are primarily intended for recreational purposes, aiding general navigation for leisurely exploration. We strongly advise against using them in situations that demand precise navigation, professional tasks, or emergencies.
